This 10-day itinerary extends your journey to Phobjikha’s serene Crane Valley and includes a farm-to-table farmstay for a deeper rural experience. The pacing is smooth, with the Phobjikha nature trail scheduled for the day after arrival.

14 Days / 13 Nights (Furthest: Bumthang / Tang Valley)

This itinerary offers deep cultural immersion combined with the scenic Pelela–Longtey high-valley hike en route from Phobjikha to Bumthang. Hiking in Bumthang is minimal, limited to the Pema Choling to Mebartsho trail.

Every itinerary includes airport pick-up in Paro with a traditional khadar welcome, a brief stop at Tachog Lhakhang’s iron bridge, and transfer to your Thimphu hotel. The first day is arrival-only, and the final day is dedicated to departure. Guests are required to arrange their own travel and medical insurance.

Day 1 — Arrival: Paro → Thimphu
  • Drive: ~50–65 km / 1–1.5 hours (Paro 2,235 m → Thimphu 2,320 m).
  • Activity: Arrival pickup, khadar welcome, short stop at Tachog Lhakhang / historic iron bridge. Hotel check-in and rest. Light evening walk optional.
    Why this day is restful: Long flights and customs — we keep Day 1 light so guests sleep and acclimatise.
Day 2 — Thimphu
  • Morning hike: Wangditse or Tango/Cheri (choose based on group fitness). Short to moderate; first activity of the day to help acclimatise.
  • Afternoon: National Memorial Chorten (option to light butter lamps — note: on extremely auspicious days private lamp slots may be fully booked), Tashichho Dzong (outside viewing), Buddha Dordenma / Kuenselphodrang for sunset valley views. Optional naming at Changangkha Lhakhang (names commonly given: Tandin, Sonam — family name chosen by guests).
Day 3 — Thimphu → Dochula → Punakha
  • Drive: ~75–90 km / 2–3 hours. Dochula Pass elevation ~3,100 m.
  • First activity: short viewpoint walk at Dochula (see 108 chortens and Himalayan panorama on clear days).
  • Continue to Punakha (valley ~1,200–1,300 m). Evening rest; short village walk if energy allows.
Day 4 — Punakha
  • Morning hike: Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (through rice terraces; seasonal farming scenes).
  • Afternoon: Punakha Dzong (river confluence), optional walk across the long suspension bridge.

    Optional add-on: River rafting in Punakha — ideal after the Khamsum hike for guests who want light adventure (season- & water-level dependent).
Day 4 — Punakha
  • Morning hike: Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten (through rice terraces; seasonal farming scenes).
  • Afternoon: Punakha Dzong (river confluence), optional walk across the long suspension bridge.

    Optional add-on: River rafting in Punakha — ideal after the Khamsum hike for guests who want light adventure (season- & water-level dependent).
Day 5 — Punakha → Paro
  • Drive: ~120–150 km / ~3–4 hours with stops.
  • First activity: gentle riverside or village walk in morning to stretch. Transfer to Paro. Evening: Ta Dzong (National Museum) or local market.
Day 6 — Paro
  • Early morning: Taktsang Hike (first activity). Elevation at monastery ~3,100 m. Allow ~4–6 hours round trip depending on pace; viewpoint/cafeteria is the first major stop. Taktsang is central to Bhutanese spiritual life — a pilgrimage site associated with Guru Padmasambhava.
  • Late afternoon: restorative hot-stone bath in a farmhouse (artemisia infusion). Optional archery or traditional darts at the farmhouse.
Day 7 — Departure only
  • Transfer to Paro Airport. No activities. Tashi Delek.

Day 1 — Arrival: Paro → Thimphu (Day 1 arrival only)

Day 2 — Thimphu (Hike first)
  • Morning: Wangditse / Tango / Cheri hike (first activity).
  • Afternoon: Memorial Chorten (butter-lamp option), Changangkha naming option, Takin Preserve, Kuenselphodrang (Buddha Dordenma)
Day 3 — Thimphu → Dochula → Punakha
  • First activity: viewpoint at Dochula and walk; continue to Punakha. Afternoon: short visit to Chimi Lhakhang (fertility temple) — naming option here too (popular choices include Kinley or Chimi). If a mother wishes the tradition, she may carry the large wooden phallus and circle the temple three times as part of the fertility rite.
Day 4 — Punakha (Hike first)
  • Morning: Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten hike (first activity).
  • Afternoon: Punakha Dzong, suspension bridge and optional rafting (seasonal).
Day 5 — Punakha → Phobjikha (Gangtey) — arrival day (no big hike)
  • Drive: ~78 km / ~2.5–3.5 hours. Elevation Phobjikha ~2,865–3,000 m depending on valley spot.
  • Afternoon: settle into Gangtey lodge, short village walk; rest. (Important: the main nature trail is next morning — not on arrival.)
Day 6 — Phobjikha (Hike first) — Gangtey nature trail & Crane Centre
  • Morning: Gangtey nature trail (first activity) — gentle, scenic meadow walk around Gangtey Goenpa; in winter look for black-necked cranes.
  • Afternoon: Black-Necked Crane Centre and local monastery visit. (Annual Crane Festival is typically 11 Nov and cranes arrive late Oct–Mar.)
Day 7 — Phobjikha farm-to-table & cultural afternoon
  • Morning: short farm walk first (first activity), then farm-to-table lunch at a farmhouse — meet the family, see vegetable beds and learn local cooking. Afternoon: optional archery session at the farmstay or free time.
Day 8 — Phobjikha → Paro via scenic route
  • Drive: allow 4–6 hours with photo stops. Evening in Paro: museum or rest.
Day 9 — Paro (Hike first): Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) & hot-stone bath
  • Early: Taktsang hike (first activity). Afternoon hot-stone bath and farmhouse activities (archery/darts).
Day 10 — Departure only
  • Transfer to Paro Airport. No activities.

Day 6 — Phobjikha (Hike first)
  • Gangtey nature trail (crane season Oct–Mar) and Crane Centre. Evening farmstay/archery.
Day 7 — Phobjikha → Pelela → Longtey → Bumthang (hike included)
  • First activity: Pelela → Longtey high-valley hike (moderate/demanding depending on season). This is the special cross-over hike on your requested route; in late autumn/winter guests may encounter yak herds.
  • Drive onward to Bumthang (Jakar). Allow for a long travel day with photo & rest stops; total driving time varies (Phobjikha → Pelela → Bumthang sections combined ~6–8 hours across stops).
Day 8 — Bumthang: Pema Choling nunnery → Mebartsho (Burning Lake) (Hike first)
  • Morning first activity: walk from Pema Choling nunnery to Mebartsho (Burning Lake) — easy, sacred trail with rich Pema Lingpa stories. Afternoon: local farmhouse lunch, visit to nunnery, rest. This is the only hike scheduled in Bumthang as requested.
Day 9 — Bumthang: Tamshing & Jambay / Kurjey (temple visits)
  • Morning: Tamshing Monastery (Pema Lingpa’s temple — on Bhutan’s UNESCO tentative list for its murals & ritual objects).
  • Afternoon: Kurjey Lhakhang (Guru Rinpoche imprint) and Jambay Lhakhang.
Day 10 — Bumthang: Local producers & craft day
  • Visit the Swiss-style cheese workshop, Red Panda Brewery, local textile shops and mask makers. Afternoon free.
Day 11 — Bumthang → Trongsa → Punakha (or direct toward Paro depending on routing)
  • Stop at Trongsa Dzong and Ta Dzong museum if travelling west via Trongsa. Scenic drives and stops; rest evening in Punakha or Trongsa depending on routing.
Day 12 — Return toward Paro; rest day or light sightseeing in Thimphu if timing allows
Day 13 — Paro (Hike first): Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) & hot-stone bath
  • Early hike (first activity), late afternoon hot-stone bath.
Day 14 — Departure only
  • Transfer to Paro Airport. No activities.
