Sustainable Development Fee
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a vital part of Bhutan’s tourism policy, designed to support the country’s long-term vision of responsible, high-value, and low-volume tourism. By contributing to the SDF, every visitor plays an active role in preserving Bhutan’s pristine environment, vibrant culture, and unique way of life.
What is the SDF?
The SDF is a daily fee paid by international tourists visiting Bhutan. It helps fund essential national priorities such as:
Environmental conservation
Cultural preservation
Infrastructure improvement
Education and healthcare
Sustainable community development
This ensures that tourism directly benefits the people of Bhutan while maintaining the country’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Current SDF Rates
International tourists: USD 100 per person, per night
Indian nationals: Nu. 1,200 per person, per night
Any new offers or time-bound incentives from the Government of Bhutan will be communicated by Penjo Tours as soon as they are announced.
Why the SDF Matters
Bhutan follows a “High Value, Low Volume” tourism approach to avoid over-tourism and protect its fragile ecosystems. The SDF helps ensure that every journey:
Supports conservation of national parks and biodiversity
Helps sustain cultural festivals and traditional arts
Contributes to clean energy, waste management, and rural development
Improves visitor facilities and overall travel experience
